Time
8:00 am Check-in

Report as a team to the Lodge.  First you will be directed inside to pick-up your team's T-shirts and sign waivers.  You will then be sent to Gear Check which will take place on the patio outside the Lodge.  After Gear Check instructions will be given on where to place your bikes.


9:00 am Race meeting/Competition begins
Race start will be in the parking lot at the Lodge.  You will be given your first set of maps at the start of the race.  No maps will be posted prior to the start.

Competition Information

Format
The Iowa Sports Foundation Adventure Race course should last approximately 5-8 hours and cover 25-50 miles.  It is designed to challenge all adventure racing abilities.  It will consist of trail running/hiking, mountain biking (road and single track), paddling and other water challenges, land navigation and several team challenges.  This is an unsupported race- required gear must be carried by the team at all times- support crews will not be allowed.

Equipment

Mandatory Personal Equipment

  • Photo ID

  • Mountain Bike (no road bikes)
  • Bike Helmet
  • Gear Pack (Packs must be worn the entire race and it is encouraged to have a plan to keep pack dry)
  • Hydration Pack- able to carry 70-100 oz bladder

Mandatory Team Equipment

  • 1 Cell Phone (must be in a water proof bag)

  • Rope (teams of two bring 1-50 Ft rope, teams of four bring 2- 50 Ft rope)- click here for rope example
  • First Aid Kit (must include band aids, Antibiotic Ointment, ace bandage, gauze, anti-inflammatory, Tylenol or equivalent product, 1 pair of latex gloves)
  • Water proof map bag
  • Nutrition/Energy Bar
  • Sunscreen
  • Compass
  • Tire patch kit, extra tube(s), bike pump
  • Pencil or Pen
  • Race Number- will be issued at registration and must be worn on the back of Captain's pack

Provided Equipment

  • Canoes (must use provided canoes)
  • Paddles (must use the provided paddles- double-ended kayak style paddles will not be allowed)
  • PFD (must be worn at all times in designated areas).  Teams can bring their own PFD but are responsible for it throughout the race.
  • Maps/Course instructions & check-point cards
  • Post Race Snacks (watermelon, yogurt, cookies, etc.)

Rules
Additional rules specific to this race will be given on race day during registration.

These rules are written to ensure the safety and integrity of teams and race staff/volunteers.  The rules will be enforced by Iowa Games race staff and volunteers.

  • Any protests can be made after completion of the race to the race commissioner by a member of the race team.  All decisions by the race commissioner are final.
  • Portions of this race will occur on roads.  Roads will remain open to normal traffic.  Please abide by all traffic laws and be courteous to drivers.  Teams may travel on major highways (i.e. Hwy 69, Hwy 30, I-35) only when specified on the maps/directions.
  • There will be at least one cutoff during the race.  If you are unable to reach the cutoff within a reasonable amount of time, you will be asked to stop and proceed to the race finish.
  • Teams are permitted to help each other during the race.  Teams may be awarded a time bonus for helping other teams in need.
  • Respect the environment.  No littering.  Carry out all that you carry in.  Bury all sanitary waste.
  • Towing of teammates will be allowed in the bike/hike portions of the race.

Time Penalty/Disqualification
Penalties may be added to a team's total time at the end of the race or racers may be required to stay at a checkpoint until the time penalty is up.  Race organizers will determine time penalties for specific rule infractions prior to start of race.  Winners will be the fastest complete team (including penalties) to cross the finish line with a complete check-point card.  The race organizers reserve the right to assess time penalties or determine if a person or team may continue for health, safety or other reasons (e.g. inadequate time remaining to finish entire course).  Race organizers reserve the right to change the rules or the course at any time for the best interest/safety of participants. 

  • Failure of a team to pass through each check-point according to the directions, having their check-point signed or punched at each check-point.
  • Using a mode of travel other than the one specified for each leg.
  • Any travel other than human powered travel.
  • Use of ANY electronic device other than watches, altimeters and bike computers (including laptop computers, GPS, cellular phones (unless contacting the race director) watches with GPS, etc.)
  • Littering on the course
  • Traveling within prohibited and/or private land areas.
  • Lighting a fire.
  • Arriving more than one hour late at the starting line.
  • Disobeying instructions from a race official.
  • Unauthorized road/trail travel.
  • Non-assistance to a person in danger
  • Not wearing or improperly wearing a life jacket in designated areas.
  • Not wearing a helmet while on the bike
  • Dragging a canoe on the ground.
  • Possession and/or use of a weapon.
  • Violation over the identity of a competitor or change of team member during the race.
  • Removing/altering a punch device, trail sign or marking.
  • Using maps not provided by race management.
  • Assistance by anyone in the race.
  • Not using safety gear when directed to by race management.
  • Teammates not staying within 50 feet/visible to each other.
  • Picking up and dropping off gear in a place other than at designated transition area.
  • Lost check-point card.
  • Not having race number visible at all times.

Withdrawal

  • 4 Person team- teams may continue if one team member withdraws.  The remaining competitors must carry all mandatory team gear.  There must be two competitors racing for a team to continue.  Voluntary withdrawals must occur at a transition area.  Teams that withdraw must notify race officials at the nearest transition area.  A time penalty for not finishing with all four members will be given.
  • 2 Person team- Voluntary withdrawals must occur at a transition area.  Teams that withdraw must notify race officials at the nearest transition area.

Rosters/Changes
Teams may have a maximum of 2/4 members per team depending on division entered.   Roster changes may be made at no additional charge and must be postmarked by May 28. Teams that originally register online may make roster changes online until June 4. New members and/or replacement members must complete an Individual Entry Form and the waiver must be signed.  For replacement members, please indicate which player they are replacing. Roster limits will be enforced.

Age Determining Date
Participants must be 16 years of age by the date of competition.
