Competition Information

Recreational Division (REC)

Created to give recreational teams the opportunity to compete against teams of similar skill levels from across the state. This division is only for the AYSO teams, rec teams, parks and recreation teams, YM/YWCA teams, etc., not for the all-star or select teams.

To be eligible to compete in this division, each team:

  • Must not have a professional coach.
  • Team formation must be random (not selected) and not related to the athlete's skill level.
  • Must be the same team roster from the fall or spring 2009-2010 season of play. Teams may have up to 3 guest players for 8 v 8 or 11 v 11. 2 guest players are allowed for 6 v 6 teams.
  • Must supply a copy of the regular season roster along with their team entry form! The roster must have 1 of 3 things on it to be verified: 1) Must be signed by league registrar, 2) Must be signed by the league president, or 3) Must have the official league stamp on the roster form.

**Special U6 and U8 Format

In keeping with the philosophy of the Iowa Games, the U6 and U8 division will focus on participation with a Jamboree format. No scores or standings will be kept, and all participants will receive an award.

Open Division

No restrictions as to how the team was formed or the number of guest players allowed.  If you cannot provide a copy of the regular season roster you MUST play in this division.

Open and Rec. Divisions may be divided into the subdivision(s) Blue, Red and White based on a team's rating level.  Each team MUST submit a competitive rating level between 1 and 10 on the entry form.  A rating of 10 is the most competitive team ranking. Please contact the Iowa Games office at 888-777-8881 ext.110 if you have questions concerning your rating.

Competitive/Classic Division (Comp.)

No restrictions as to how the team was formed or the number of guest players allowed. If your team(s) have: competed in the ISA State Cup; a professional coach or meet with a professional coach on a regular basis; been formed on a select basis, either by tryout, recruiting or by invitation; participated in any competitive tournaments within the last 12-months; members of an elite, premier and/or competitive club, division, and/or league; compete under the classification of "Academy" or "Classic" then you must participate in this division of play.

Competition Format (All Divisions)

Round robin play. Duration of preliminary games will be 6 minute quarters for Under 6, 8 minute quarters for Under 8, 20 minute halves for Under 9-Under 10, 25 minute halves for Under 11-Under 14, 30 minute halves for Under 16 and 35-minute halves for Under 19. Semi-final, consolation and championship games will be the same length as preliminary games. NOTE:  Not all divisions/subdivisions will playoff for medals.  Some medals will be awarded based on the results of bracket play.

Scoring (except for Under 6 & Under 8) will be based on win-loss-tie record (i.e. 3 points per win, 1 point per tie and 0 points per loss). If a tie exists in points after all preliminary games, then it will be broken by a point scoring system that will be supplied in the rules.

Coaches

All youth teams must have a coach who is at least 21 years of age.

Referee Requirements

Each team is REQUIRED TO PROVIDE QUALIFIED CENTER REFEREES; ONE (1) FOR UNDER 6 - UNDER 8 OR TWO (2) FOR UNDER 9-UNDER 19 TEAMS to officiate or assist as needed in at least three (3) games in their respective age division or older (i.e. U12 teams must submit someone at least 14 years of age, U19 teams must submit someone at least 21 years of age).
Generally, a qualified official:
  • must be able to referee the center at the age level for which the referee has been listed
  • should be someone you would want to work your gold medal game
  • should have some experience
  • can be USSF, AYSO or High School registered
  • does not have to be certified, but merely needs to meet the requirements listed above

A referee only can be listed for a maximum of two (2) teams. These requirements must be met or the team will forfeit games. Coaches will be held accountable for submitting a referee (s) that is qualified and who will do their allotted three (3) games!

Rules

Current F.I.F.A. and U.S.Y.S. rules will apply in a revised form for the Iowa Games. Additional and specific rules will be posted here approximately 7 days prior to competition. Please review prior to attending the Summer Games.

Player I.D.

Players must present a photocopy of a birth certificate with a current photo attached, driver's permit/license, provide a current player pass, INS port-of-entry stamp, or passport at check-in prior to playing. No I.D., No Play.

Age Determining Date

August 1, 2009. The best answer to determine legal players is to ask each player their age on August 1, 2009. For instance, if you are an Under 14 team, then all players must be age 13 or younger on August 1, 2009. Basically, if your team played Under 12 in the fall of 2009 and/or the spring of 2010, then your team is Under 12 for purpose of the Summer Iowa Games. Athletes competing in the Under 16 division must be at least 13 years old and athletes in the Under 19 division must be at least 14 years old. Click here for an age determining chart if you need additional assistance.

Schedule/Rules: No Schedules will be mailed!
